In the spring and summer of 2018, 'Canons in View' ran as an after school study provision focusing on photography lessons, local history and heritage. The project gave children from four Mitcham schools the opportunity to learn about The Canons re-development plans, the history of the house and the surrounding area. The project was delivered by the Mitcham Town Community Trust.
The project objectives included: confidence development, leadership, self-esteem, motivation and independent learning skills using innovative curriculum, high-tech learning environment, the latest software and the Canons heritage as an inspiration.
The project was a great success and has culminated in a ‘stunning’ open air exhibition at The Canons House & Grounds on 22nd June 2018 during the Garden Party event. Students were commended for their artistry by the Mayor of Merton and Head teacher at Cranmer School in an uplifting Award Ceremony. All schools were delighted with the project outcomes and a significant raise in pupil self-esteem and confidence was noted by teachers and staff.
The images are now on display in local schools and will be in display in the finished Canons House. We look forward to Canons in View year 2 which will engage more local students in interpreting The Canons House & Grounds in mixed media.
