New Volunteering Opportunity!

Updated: Feb 2, 2023

Interpretation Volunteers

As part of the current Lottery funded project, we are working with designers to create new interpretation inside Canons House and outside around the park. We are now looking to bring together a new group of volunteers from the local community to help develop these ambitious plans.

What do we mean by interpretation? In short, heritage interpretation explores how we communicate information to visitors. There's so much to explore at Canons and we would like to further unpack the themes of ‘people, horticulture and sport’ and ensure that unique heritage features such as the medieval dovecote and historic running track are understood and enjoyed.

Interpretation volunteers will meet fortnightly (mostly online, but some in-person meetings too) to decide how best to communicate Canons’ heritage to visitors. This will involve working with the project team and designers to explore ideas, review designs and give feedback. Sessions will be informal, and no experience is necessary.

This opportunity is likely to appeal to those interested in heritage, exhibitions, research and landscape but is suitable for anyone with an active interest in the future of Canons House & Grounds.

The first session will take place on Tuesday 21st February at 6pm. This will be your chance to hear more about the project and decide whether this opportunity is for you.

Please email info@thecanonsmitcham.co.uk to register your interest and to have a chat about the opportunity. A Zoom link for Tuesday 21st will be emailed to you ahead of the session.
