Greetings from Canons House. We are so excited to be launching a whole new program of free community use & activities at the house. Read on to find out all the ways you can get involved.
HOUSE COMMUNITY USE
1st Monday of each month (excluding bank holidays) the entire house will be open for Community groups to book any of the rooms available at no charge. We are taking expressions of interest now, contact Canons.House@merton.gov.uk with your timings & room preference. There is a limit of 6 sessions before the space(s) will be reopened for all to be able to book. Spaces, capacity & dates available to book:

Community Kitchen usage during business hours: The community kitchen (capacity 10 people) is available for use at no charge by Community Groups for small workshops/meet ups/chat groups. Nb: As the space is centred in the Sharing space it is not suitable for confidential or sensitive information. Space available during the following business hours:
Monday – Thursday between the hours 10.00 – 12.00pm & 14.00 – 16.00pm.
SHARING SPACE
Located in the basement of Canons House; the Sharing Space is a place to explore what makes Canons House and Grounds a special place. It is a mixed-use space, consisting primarily of 3 exhibition areas, for local artists and the community to share creative projects together. Here you will also find the historical timeline for the House & Grounds. There is a community kitchen which provides lunch & break out space for those working in the house and for community use for workshops, meet ups & chat groups. It's free to use however a booking is required. Contact us to check availability at canons.house@merton.gov.uk
EXHIBITION OPENING TIMES
Canons House Exhibition space has a permanent collection of pieces formed from commissions produced by local artists, community activities & workshops and our annual Summer Art Festival. You will find these pieces displayed all around the house. It is a living and breathing collection that expands with each new project. The first round of art pieces has been produced by the following artists/collectives.
Made in Merton Stitching past & present which conducted research into Canons’ links to the Mitcham textile industries. Also, research into Canons’ links to the East India Company and textile trading.
Rob Greig; House Portraits – Photographs of local residents & accompanying text about what Canons House and Grounds means to them.
Hands on Big Ideas – Canons Botanical Curiosities a collection of artefacts either found in or made using foraged materials from Canons Grounds. This collection explores, preserves and celebrates the beauty and diversity of plants and trees within the grounds.
The community is invited to view the collection on the following days:

HOUSE HISTORY TOURS
Last Sunday of the month with volunteer Dom. House tour focusing on the historical aspects of the House, ending in Sharing Space with opportunity to visit current exhibitions. Booking required, please see website Canons House | Canons (thecanonsmitcham.co.uk)
PRELOVED STUDIO
Since launching in May 2023, the Preloved Studio has been run in partnership with Sustainable Merton through their project, The Wheel. Resident businesses include local CIC - Little A.R.K., RE-RUNN & guest pop-up Make with Mermaid. The Studio, based at Canons House, Mitcham, is the home of community workshops and weekly drop-in sessions for Merton residents to learn skills to reduce textile waste and avoid fast fashion. The Studio also has residency places for local, circular, slow fashion and textile reuse start-ups. Contact thewheel@sustainablemerton.org for more information.
