Friends of the Canons June Workday
Time & Location
About the event
We had hoped that wood-chip would have been delivered in time for us to spread the load as a mulch for the newly-planted whips during our May workday. Unfortunately this did not get delivered on time, but has now been placed near the new whips plantation on Three Kings Piece. Grass growth has been considerable here, even before this week's deluge, so spreading the mulch is imperative this month. We may need to lessen the grass before getting to grips with the mulch – we'll decide on the day.
Co-incidentally, we have been asked to spread more mulch in the Canons. The swamp cypress at the back of Canons House has had a semi-circle guard in place for some years to prevent grass mowers damaging the surrounds, and from excessive footfall compacting the soil. However, last month the undergrowth within the semi-circle was strimmed, so the mulch cover needs replacing. Material will be delivered by June 23rd, so it is hoped both this, and the above areas can be managed on this workday.
Some Friends suffer from spreading mulch (Farmer's Lung), so, for them, a more leisurely task awaits. FroC adopted the triangle of abandoned land on Lower Green West two years ago. The patch had an excellent show of tulips this year, but, with the flowering now finished, the area needs a little sprucing-up. Some grass shearing and shrub pruning is envisaged.
All tools will be provided; please wear appropriate boots or shoes. We shall start at 10.00, meeting by the pond in the Canons, then dispersing to the three areas. If you can't be there at 10.00, please join whichever group you fancy during the morning. Although we plan to work through until 13.00, please do not feel obliged to stay for the whole session – any volunteer time is precious to us.
