About the event

Visit us in the grounds of The Canons to celebrate Mitcham Heritage Day. The day celebrates Mitcham as part of Heritage Open Days, and includes 12 heritage sites across the area to visit, as well as a guided walk and an evening concert. The details of Mitcham Heritage Day can be found here; it is coordinated by Mitcham Cricket Green Community & Heritage.

At the Canons, we will have a stand on the East Lawn near the dovecote, with lots of information about the upcoming Lottery-funded project and the work on the house & grounds, due to begin in early 2020.

There will be information on the results of the archaeological dig, and history about the house and its previous owners and tenants.

We have a special exhibition from local students called Canons in View. The children spent the Spring term learning photography skills and visiting The Canons. They have produced lovely mixed media interpretations of their experiences and knowledge of The Canons, which will be on display in the Walled Garden.

We will also have master plasterer Philip Gaches joining us to give demonstrations of plasterwork. There will be three demonstrations at 10.15, 11.30 and 13.00, in which Philip will give a short talk explaining the different between pre 1700 and post 1700 plastering, followed by a demonstration of the differences, and some hands-on fun for visitors. Please arrive 10 minutes before the demonstration to get involved.

Please join us, chat to the project team and sign up to our newsletter to hear about the Lottery project as it progresses.

Please note, the Canons House will not be open. The dovecote may be open for tours pending a health and safety assessment.
