Canons House & Grounds

Canons House & Grounds is a £4.4 million project made possible thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund. The project is being undertaken by Merton Council with support from many community groups.

The project will run until September 2023 and includes both a major capital works project and a programme of community events and activities.

Canons House

Canons House is being restored back to its former glory. 

In the basement there will be a new flexible community space with exhibits that showcase the rich heritage of Canons and its surroundings. 

On the ground floor the drawing room will be available for community use, whilst the other rooms will be let for business use. 

The first floor rooms will be let for business use.

New Café and Toilets

There will be a new café with both indoor and outdoor seating and space to hold events.

New park toilets are being built and will be accessed via the café.

New Community Garden

There will be a brand new community garden designed for growing fruits and vegetables.

Historic Running Track

The 1920s running track, former home of the Mitcham Athletics Club, is being restored. There will be a new surface and the track will be surrounded by wildflowers.

Walled Garden

The walled garden is being restored with repairs to brickwork and a new planting scheme.

Canons Pond

Major works to Canons Pond are being carried out which include dredging and installing a new liner.

There will be a new pathway around the pond and a nature-friendly planting scheme.

The Obelisk

The obelisk itself is being repaired and the area surrounding it transformed into a new entrance to Canons House & Grounds. 

The existing wall will be replaced by a new beech hedge and there will be new ornamental planting.
